Am I Eligible for the Abortion Pill?

Abortion Pill Eligible and Information in Texas

While Texas currently bans abortion, it’s still critical to understand all your options, including the abortion pill.

You could be eligible for the abortion pill in a state where it is legal if you meet the following conditions.

#1. You Are Ten Weeks Pregnant or Less

The abortion pill is only FDA-approved for use within the first ten weeks of pregnancy. After this timeframe, another form of abortion might be considered a safer option.

#2. You Do Not Have an Ectopic Pregnancy or Miscarriage

If you haven’t had an ultrasound after a positive pregnancy test result, this should be your next step.

In addition to telling you how far along you are, an ultrasound will also identify the location of your pregnancy and whether or not it’s progressing with a heartbeat.

If your pregnancy is located outside your uterus, it is
ectopic, which is a medical emergency. You would need to seek immediate treatment for this condition to prevent complications. The abortion pill will not treat this condition.

If your pregnancy doesn’t have a heartbeat and is not progressing, you could have
miscarried. While some miscarriages resolve on their own without treatment, sometimes treatment is necessary.

#3. You Do Not Have a Certain Medical Condition

Certain medical conditions would make the abortion pill no longer an option for you. In addition to being too far along in your pregnancy and having a suspected ectopic pregnancy, these include:

  • Having an IUD currently in place (this would need to be removed)
  • Having a certain medical condition, such as a bleeding disorder or certain heart or blood vessel diseases
  • Taking a blood thinner or specific steroid medicine
  • Having an allergy to the drugs
  • Being unable to make follow-up visits to a provider or unable to access emergency care

#4. You Do Not Have Any Untreated STDs

Even though being cleared of STDs is not an official requirement for the abortion pill, getting tested and treated first is critical to protecting your reproductive health.

There’s a chance that STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can spread deeper into the reproductive tract
during an abortion and lead to the development of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

PID can lead to long-term complications such as infertility and chronic pelvic pain.
